Prepare a redacted data sample
Turn a Slack export, a mailbox or a spreadsheet export into a small redacted sample that a data buyer can price. Everything runs in your browser: your files are read on this computer, and nothing is uploaded unless you choose to.
How does the sample tool work?
You add your exports, the tool counts what they hold, replaces names and contact details with consistent labels, and picks a small sample for you to check. You then download one file and decide who receives it. Everything happens in your browser.
Add your exports
A Slack export, a mailbox, spreadsheet exports from your business software, or a documents folder.
See the inventory
Date ranges, volume by month, threads, people as a count, attachments and columns: what a buyer asks about first.
Review the redacted sample
About 25 messages from 10 threads spread across the years, plus 50 rows per spreadsheet. Remove, reshuffle or leave out whole channels and columns.
Download the package
One file with the inventory, the approved sample and replacement counts. You decide who receives it.
What gets redacted?
Every name the tool can identify becomes a consistent label, so Person 04 is the same person in every message and file. Email addresses, phone numbers, street addresses, card and bank numbers, ID numbers, IP addresses, links and passwords are replaced too.
- People
Person 01From Slack profiles, email headers and name columns; a first or last name on its own is caught too.- Customers and companies
Customer 01, Company 01From customer, client, vendor and account columns.- Your own terms
Term 01Your company name, key customers, project code names.- Email addresses
person01@example.invalidThe same person keeps the same address throughout.- Phone numbers
[PHONE]US and international formats.- Street addresses
[ADDRESS]House number and street, and PO boxes.- Card numbers
[CARD]Numbers that pass the card checksum.- Bank account numbers
[IBAN]IBANs that pass their check digits.- Social Security numbers
[SSN]US format.- IP addresses
[IP]IPv4 and IPv6.- Links
https://[URL]The scheme stays; the address goes.- Passwords and keys
[SECRET]Labelled passwords and long token-like strings.- Dates of birth
[DOB]When they are labelled as such.
You can also replace money amounts and dates, and turn on free-text name detection for names that appear only inside message text.
What files work?
Slack workspace exports (.zip), mailboxes (.mbox or .eml files), spreadsheet exports (.csv) from business software, and documents folders, which are counted but never opened. Microsoft 365 mail works once it is exported to .mbox or .eml.
Slack workspace export (.zip)
Workspace owners and admins export from the workspace settings. Add the .zip as it downloads; for a very large export, unzip it and choose the folder.

Gmail and Google Workspace (.mbox)
Google Takeout downloads Gmail as an .mbox file inside a .zip: unzip it and add the .mbox. Workspace admins can export every user’s mail with the Data Export tool.
Apple Mail and Thunderbird (.mbox, .eml)
In Apple Mail, choose Mailbox > Export Mailbox and add the folder it creates. In Thunderbird, select the messages and save them as .eml files.
Microsoft 365 and Outlook
Outlook’s .pst files can’t be read here yet. Save the messages as .eml, or open the mailbox in Thunderbird or Apple Mail and export it from there; use CSV exports for business data.
Business software (.csv)
Export reports or lists as CSV: accounting transactions, field-service jobs and invoices, CRM and help-desk records. If a report only exports to Excel, open it and save it as CSV.
- Intuit: Export your QuickBooks Online data
- ServiceTitan, Inc.: Run, filter, and export reports
Documents folder (counted only)
Choose the folder: the tool counts files by type, size and date, and lists top-level folders as Folder 01, Folder 02. It never opens a file.
Is anything uploaded?
No. The tool runs in your browser and reads your files on this computer. The package is created on this computer too, and nothing is uploaded unless you choose to share it.
Original values are kept in this browser tab only, so you can compare them with their replacements. They are never written to the package, and a final check blocks the download if any of them would appear in it.
Why send a redacted sample instead of an export?
A buyer cannot firm up a price without seeing what your records look like, and a small redacted sample shows that without handing over raw company email. Agree the scope and sign an NDA before you send it.
Read what buyers look for in a data sample and what a data inventory covers before you choose what to include.
Can the redaction miss something?
Yes, which is why you review every item before sharing it. Names typed into messages are the hardest to catch: optional free-text detection helps, and Show originals lets you compare each replacement on this computer before you download.
A redacted sample can still reveal business facts such as prices, plans or a customer you could be recognised by. Leave out anything you would not license; the tool makes it easy to drop an item, a channel or a column.
The tool
Prepare your sample
Your files are read by this browser on this computer. Nothing is sent anywhere unless you choose to share the finished package.
The sample tool needs JavaScript, because it reads your files inside your browser. Turn JavaScript on to use it; the rest of this page reads fine without it.
1. Add your files
Add a Slack export (.zip), a mailbox (.mbox or .eml files), spreadsheet exports (.csv) or a documents folder. You can add several; each is read in turn.
Drop files or a folder here
or
Large mailboxes are read as a stream, so they can take a few minutes. You can cancel at any time.
2. Check the inventory
These are the counts that go into the package: volumes, date ranges, threads and file types. Names of channels, people, domains and folders stay on this computer.
3. Choose what to redact
Names from Slack profiles, email headers and spreadsheet name columns are replaced automatically, along with email addresses, phone numbers, street addresses, card and bank numbers, ID numbers, IP addresses, links and passwords.
4. Review the sample
Every replacement is highlighted. Remove anything you would not share, swap items with Reshuffle, and leave out whole channels, labels or columns. Free-text detection can miss names, so read each item.
You are seeing the original text with what will be replaced highlighted. Originals are never written to the package.
5. Download the package
One JSON file: the inventory, the redacted sample, replacement counts by category and your two confirmations. It never contains original values or your own terms.
Final check passed: no original name, address or term from the dictionary appears in the package.
Tick both confirmations to download, copy or upload the package.
