Licensing company data, by industry
Whether a company in a given industry can license its records, and what changes the answer.
- Can a construction company sell its data to AI companies?
Often, yes, for records your company wrote, such as daily logs, RFIs and change orders. Under standard AIA terms, the drawings belong to the architect.
- Can a dental practice sell its data to AI companies?
Usually not patient records: a practice that files claims electronically is a HIPAA covered entity. Its own operating records are a separate question.
- Can a law firm sell its data to AI companies?
Usually not client matter files without the client's informed consent, under Rule 1.6 and state versions. The firm's own administrative records are different.
- Can a manufacturer sell its data to AI companies?
Often, yes, for a plant's own work orders, quality and maintenance records. Customer drawings, export-controlled data and NDA material need sorting first.
- Can a marketing agency sell its data to AI companies?
Usually not client work, which client contracts, NDAs and ad-platform terms tie to the client. The agency's own operating records are a separate question.
- Can a property management company sell its data to AI companies?
Often, for records a manager creates, like work orders, if its agreements allow. Lease and applicant files may be the owners'; screening reports are restricted.
- Can a roofing company sell its data to AI companies?
Often, yes, for estimates, job records and photos. Claim files and third-party content, such as EagleView reports and Xactimate pricing, need sorting first.
- Can a staffing agency sell its data to AI companies?
Possibly, for job orders, submittals and placements. Federal law limits background checks, I-9s and medical records; client contracts can limit more.
- Can a trucking company sell its data to AI companies?
Often, yes: 15 providers name freight, logistics or dispatch records. Check broker and shipper confidentiality terms, and keep driver qualification files out.
- Can a wholesale distributor sell its data to AI companies?
Often, for order, inventory and purchasing history. Supplier costs, special pricing and customer contract prices may be others' confidential information.
- Can an accounting firm sell client data to AI companies?
Usually not without each client's consent, under the AICPA Code, state rules and, for tax files, IRC §7216. The firm's own records are a separate question.
- Can an e-commerce store sell its data to AI companies?
An e-commerce store can license operational history when orders, support tickets and returns preserve how the business worked.
- Can an HVAC company sell its data to AI companies?
Often, yes, for service tickets, estimates and maintenance history. Call recordings need a check of recording-consent law and card numbers first.
- Can an insurance agency sell its data to AI companies?
Possibly. Eight providers name insurance, but policyholders' personal information falls under state privacy rules and carrier agreements. Check both first.
- Can an MSP sell its ticket data to AI companies?
Partly. Tickets, time entries and runbooks an MSP wrote are its own records, but they carry client data and credentials held under each client's MSA.
